On November 8, the GRAMMYs announced their highly-anticipated nominations for the prestigious awards, set to be held on 2 February 2025. Highlights include both Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan being nominated for all four main categories: Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. 2024 has certainly been a year for women in pop!
Beyoncé has been nominated a record-breaking 11 times for her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, alongside her viral record 'TEXAS HOLD 'EM'. This has made her the most-nominated artist ever, bringing the total number to 99 over the course of her career, winning 32 overall.
There were also a few surprise nominations with Shaboozey's 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' up for Song of the Year and Jacob Collier being one of two men up for Album of the Year, with Djesse Vol. 4. This pushed Ariana Grande's newest album eternal sunshine off the bill and hits like 'we can't be friends' and 'the boy is mine' were left not nominated for the big three categories. Fans were unhappy about the lack of recognition for the artist's seventh studio album, while others were disappointed by there being no nominations for Hozier for his track 'Too Sweet' and Dua Lipa for her album Radical Optimism. Many were also shocked by Jack Antonoff being missed from the list of nominees for Producer of the Year after winning the award for the past three years.
Meanwhile, after winning Album of the Year for the fourth time this year for her album Midnights, Taylor Swift has made history once again becoming the artist with the most nominations in the category. She now has seven!
When it comes to the winners, it's very difficult to predict the main four as they all offer a very strong lineup. The most contentious of all categories is Best New Artist, with the question of "what makes these artists new?" always arising. The likes of RAYE and Sabrina Carpenter have been in the industry for the past decade, and yet the Academy recognises them as 'new'. However, I think for this award the winner is almost definitely between Carpenter and Chappell Roan.
For Album of the Year, I'm personally rooting for Billie Eilish and think that she has a great chance of winning, but Charli xcx's BRAT has, of course, taken over popular culture this year since before its initial release in June. Record of the Year may, once again, be between Carpenter and Roan, with 'Espresso' and 'Good Luck Babe!' being the top contenders for me while Song of the Year should go to Eilish's 'BIRDS OF A FEATHER' or 'Die With A Smile' by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Who do you think should win the big four? The nominations for the main four categories are as follows:
