Storm Darragh continues to cause disruption in York and North Yorkshire.

More than 150,000 remain without power today across the UK. Two seperate deaths have been confirmed in Lancashire in Birmingham from falling trees.

Darragh made landfall on the 6th, as the Met Office issued multiple 'danger to life' red-warnings for wind down England's west coast.

Millions of Brits received the warning on their phones via the government alert system - the largest use of the system in history.

5 flood warnings and 8 flood alerts remain in place today across York.

Severe flooding was reported across the North York Moors on the 7th, accompanied by 50mph gales that left trees blocking roads across North Yorkshire.

The River Ouse burst its banks in York on the 8th, submerging waterfront businesses like Plonkers' Wine Bar and the King's Arms.

Students also reported minor flooding on-campus, with water submerging paths in and around Derwent College. Several trees were felled on West Campus, which the estates team are in the process of clearing up today.

Almost 500 hundred homes in and around York were hit by power cuts across the weekend.

High winds meant the Christmas Market was closed on Saturday, to the shock of  tourists. Many had arrived unawares of the announcement, and found themselves stranded in a city with little to do. Most other tourist attractions in York (Clifford’s Tower, Yorkshire Museum Gardens, the York city walls and Spark:York) had closed as well.

The Market reopened on Sunday.

The Christmas Market regularly brings thousands of visitors to York every weekend. Read Nouse's piece about what it's like to work there as a student here.
