In response to ongoing far-right violence across the UK, Stand Up To Racism hosted an anti-racism protest on Saturday 10 August at St Helen’s Square in central York. York Central MP Rachael Maskell attended this protest and spoke to protestors: “Stand together today and know that you are here shaping history, that you are here shaping our future.”

Chair of York Green Party Tom Franklin led the rally, referencing the rumours of far-right riot on Wednesday and subsequent arrests: “There is hope. After a few days when things really did look very ugly, and many Muslims were truly terrified to leave their homes, we’ve seen a huge up-swelling of love and solidarity.”

Signs at the rally contained pro-immigration, anti-racist and anti-fascist sentiments: “York says NO to racism”, “Say it loud, say it clear: Refugees are welcome here” and “Migrants make our NHS”.

On 10 August, the North Yorkshire Police released a statement, “Regardless of who you are, if you are intending to participate or perpetrate disorder, you will be arrested and held accountable for your actions.

“As part of our efforts, you will also notice an increased police presence in our area over the coming days. This is to reassure you and maintain the safety of our residents and visitors.”

Three men aged 19, 22 and 22 were arrested in Fawcett Street, York on 10 August. They were later charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. Later the same evening, a far-right protest was rumoured to be occurring in York.

Close to York, officers arrested a man aged 18 on Roscoe Street, Scarborough on 8 August. He was later charged with “racially/religiously aggravated harassment, having an article with intent to destroy/damage property, and obstructing/resisting a constable in the execution of their duty”.
