Today, the University of York Swimming and Waterpolo Club (UYSWC) are set to host a swimathon.
The event correlates with Ovarian Awareness Month, which occurs every March. Occurring annually the swimathon was created to observe the memory of Sabrina Jones, a former UYSWC member, who passed away from Ovarian Cancer in 2016.
Beginning at 6:00 am, the event will run until 3:30 pm and then from 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm with participants striving to swim as far as they can in a single day.
This year UY Triathlon and Octopush (the University’s Underwater Hockey club) will both be in attendance. Lara Fahy, UYSWC’s Charity Officer stated: “By inviting both clubs to join us we are expanding our outreach within our university community. This means us aquatic-based clubs are given the opportunity to give back to a cause close to our hearts and truly do it justice”.
The President of UY Triathlon Danielle Weir also commented: “This year [York’s] Triathlon club is very excited to join UYSWC for the charity swimathon. We commend UYSWC’s initiative in organising such a meaningful event and are eager to collaborate in support of this important cause”.
UYSWC will have a table in York Sports Village, with various posters, leaflets, and wristbands, in the hope of reaching out to the local community and spreading awareness for Target Ovarian Cancer.
