It is important not to judge this podcast by its name. No: it’s not a podcast on how to be ‘skinny’ although lots of health and wellness tips are addressed. Instead skinny is synonymous for getting the scoop. Founded by serial entrepreneurs Lauryn and Michael Bosstick in 2011 the conversations are described as ‘no-censor advice’ covering wellness, business, beauty and lifestyle tips. What started as a blog fuelled by Lauryn’s unfulfillment with college (which she got through working two jobs) has expanded into a podcast, book, app and blog design company. Her husband and business partner Michael also owns the podcast production company, Dear Media Production, that hosts The Skinny Confidential along with other highly praised podcasts such as Friend of a Friend and The Dog that Changed Me.
Most episodes are an hour long, perfect for accompanying you on a walk or workout session and they are always filled with everything you would want from an interview. The guests range from social media stars like Aimee Song of Song of Style, famous dermatologists including Dr. Dennis Gross as well as sports marketers, CEO’s and motivational entrepreneurs. The list goes on so whether you are male, female, interested in fashion, beauty, sports or entrepreneurship don’t get put off by the seemingly light, girly exterior because you are likely to find an episode to truly engage you.
If you’re like me and thrive on should this be off? routines, time management and holy-grail products then you will love these episodes as they cover lots of ground regarding guests’ everyday essentials. Both Lauryn and Michael have mastered their craft and listening to the episodes truly feels like a privilege. They ask the right questions, keep the momentum throughout the hour and maintain the perfect balance between humour and constructive conversation. It’s like having an encyclopaedia on how to live the perfect life!
I began listening to podcasts when I started university almost 2 years ago and this was one of the first that I fell in love with. Some of my favourite episodes include conversations with Ed Mylett, Dr Dennis Gross and Jen Atkin all of which have given me a piece of advice or thought to take away from the listen. This may all sound a little cheesy or cliché, but as with most things, if you don’t try you’ll never know.
The most recent episode I listened to was with Emma Grede, for those who don’t know she is the East London powerhouse behind the hugely successful Kardashian endorsed brands, CEO of Good American and founding partner of both Skims and Safely, proving herself over and over. She is the modern entrepreneur, one of the first to harness the power of influencer marketing by bringing it to the next level, securing equity stakes in brands - not just endorsement checks.
What this podcast does so well is bring to light that there is no one-way street to success, every guest has a different story, some of which are very untraditional. This podcast truly demonstrates that as long as you are willing to work harder than anyone in the room and choose something you love then you are already on the right track. If anything, it’s a motivational and reassuring listen.
If you’re looking for a podcast that will tell you in vast detail about business dynamics, financial forecasts or somebody’s investment portfolio then this won’t be it. But if you want to understand the philosophy behind successful people, their everyday habits, routines and beliefs then you have come to the right place. What lies at the core of this podcast is the understanding that the little things you do every day will be what creates the person you become. So if you’re in the mood for some motivation type in The Skinny Confidential to the search bar.
