Monday mornings. Arguably the worst time of the week, but not since I discovered my local gem of a coffee shop: 52 Broadway. My housemates and I have made it a weekly ritual to nip to this family-run café and grab a coffee and a cake to brighten up our week and I have to say, it’s been a saving grace and very much needed over the last term.

52 Broadway is a family business run by mother and daughter duo Theresa and Elle Burn. After making my way through their entire menu of delicious bakes, I had to speak to them to find out more.

Starting off with the origins of the business, here is where I learnt that the café is run by the mother and daughter. Broadway then told me they also own a ladies hairdressers and barbers next door to the café which is run by Theresa’s husband and Molly, another of her daughters. I love this mini Fulford Empire that the family is running!

52 Broadway opened in June 2018 with immediate success amongst the community. But after Theresa fell ill with cancer, they were forced to shut in September of that same year. She has since luckily recovered and had the all-clear, something which I am sure you’ll be as delighted as I am to hear. They reopened in November 2019 and have been supplying Fulford with their coffee fix ever since.

When asked about their reasoning for opening, Theresa said “Whilst I worked in the ladies salon, I used to serve customers with a coffee and they always used to say ‘a cake would go nice with this coffee’ and when I thought about it there wasn’t a coffee shop in Fulford.” And that’s how 52 Broadway was born! They also mention that a lot of people missed a community hub in the village and 52 Broadway has fixed that. Forever offering service with a smile and a chat, a visit never fails to brighten my day.

Elle, Theresa’s daughter is the mastermind behind the cafe’s bakes and sweet treats. From easter egg cheesecakes and Biscoff cookie dough to dirty rascals and freshly made scones, 52 Broadway has a treat to curb anyone’s sweet tooth cravings. But when asked what her favourite thing is to bake she suggested “Snickers flapjack is the best, once you try one you will understand.” So you heard it here first folks, trying the snickers flapjack is a must!

Small businesses like Broadway café have been some of the worst affected by the pandemic. The hospitality sector has had to adapt many new methods in order to survive, with takeout being the most widely used. Takeout is something that Broadway is certainly smashing. Every time I visit there is always a queue eager to get their hands on the best coffee Fulford has to offer and some freshly baked goods. They stated that “we have kept ourselves busy by adapting to this situation. For example for Mother’s Day we did 154 takeaway afternoon teas. We have also been delivering to those who can’t get out.’ I don’t know about you but my mouth is watering at the thought of a take-out afternoon tea right now! (Pictured below)

When asked about any exciting plans the café had for the future post-pandemic, they revealed they are planning a build for more seating, plans for which can be found here. This is something that really does excite me.

If you can't tell, I'm one of the biggest cheerleaders of 52 Broadway Coffee Shop, so if you’re around Fulford (on your way to Aldi perhaps) and need a sign to visit this hidden gem, this is it. I’d highly recommend the cheesecakes!
