A former York academic is set to face jail in January after admitting to a series of "extremely serious offences" involving sexual images of children.

Dr Allan Richard Hall was a member of the Department of Archaeology from 1977 until August 2013.

He pleaded guilty to 11 offences of distributing indecent images of children and 21 offences of possessing indecent images of children in his appearance before York Crown Court.

All of the offences occurred before or on 19 June 2013.

His case has been adjourned until 26 January. Hall has been released on bail and must now register as a sex offender.
