Best for value: Rustique

Serving traditional french food in a homely atmosphere, Rustique is a favourite amongst students. Offering three courses for £15, it's a great value option. There are two Rustique restaurants in York (Castlegate and Lendal), which are equally great, so take your pick.

If you're a fan of tapas, then Ambiente is the restaurant for you. It serves authentic tapas in a contemporary setting, and isn't too expensive. The bar menu is a great option for sharing; you pick 3 dishes for £9.99, and 6 dishes is plenty between two.

Best for pub food: House of Trembling Madness

As well as being many people's favourite pub in York, Trembling Madness is also a great place for food. The platters are great, and include things like Yorkshire cheeses, homemade pickles, and charcuterie. The burgers are also reasonably priced at £9.
