Live & Loud 2013, York's alternative freshers' ball, will feature Katy B, The Pigeon Detectives, and Shy FX & Stamina MC.

Katy B, the 24 year old Peckham-born artist and BRIT School graduate's first single from her upcoming second album What Love is Made Of was released on July 7. Her first single Katy on a Mission (2010) reached number five in the UK singles charts. Her debut album On a Mission (2011) peaked at number two in the UK Album charts. In 2012, Broken Record won the NME Best Dancefloor Anthem award.

The Pigeon Detectives were formed in Yorkshire in 2004 and have released four albums since their debut Wait for Me (2007). Their most recent album We Met At Sea, was released in April 2013 and was reviewed by Nouse. In 2009, the indie rock band recorded and released a cover version of Tainted Love, made famous by Leeds band Soft Cell. All proceeds were donated to a charity which helped neglected children in Leeds.

Shy FX, aka Andre Williams, is an English DJ and producer from London who specialises in drum and bass and jungle music. Stamina MC is the stage name of drum and bass MC and vocalist Linden Reeves. The pair performed together at Playfest 2012.

The Pigeon Detectives performed at Live & Loud 2011, alongside DJ Fresh and Rizzle Kicks. This event received much criticism due to the limited capacities of the venues on Heslington West. Last year Live & Loud, headlined by Professor Green, was moved to an outdoor stage on Heslington East so that all ticket holders would be able to see the main acts. This year the event will be held again on Heslington East campus.

YUSU President Kallum Taylor said: "This is looking like an awesome night and we're really pumped for it! This year's headliners offer an exceptionally strong line up and, between them, they offer the variety and energy we're after to deliver the festival feel we're going for this year. They're all amazing acts to witness live and I'm sure that this event - with an even bigger capacity than last year - will be something our students remember for a long time. It's without a doubt the best event on campus, across the whole calendar, and I'd encourage students to move fast if they want in on it! The Comedy Night's sold out already, that's never happened before, and they're going faster than ever for this one."

A third year history student said: "I've never heard of the two DJs before in my life, but I'm really looking forward to seeing Katy B. I have seen her before and she is an excellent live performer!"

As well as live music the event will also host an indoor silent disco, fireworks over the lake, food stalls, an outdoor shisha tent, face painting, a photo booth, food stalls and bars. Tickets for the event which will take place on the October 5 are available from the YUSU store.

Disappointed with the acts, let down compared with last year's.

Shy FX big enough to headline Live and Loud but not Nouse.. Do your research before you write him off, huge in his scene.
Anyway will be a good night I reckon!

who are the two students history student?

Dissapointed Posted on Sunday 25 Aug 2019

Why is modern music such mediocre crap? Why can't we go back to the great music of the 50's with Sinatra? Such a pity that music has gone so downhill....

Dissapointed Posted on Sunday 25 Aug 2019

I hope the festival sound will be heavily regulated, I don't want the 'music' disturbing us local residents!

Reusing a headliner from a couple of years ago that at the time were not received well seems like a bit of a shot in the foot to me.

Not a particularly strong lineup, but as a night will be fun anyway.

Also, wasn't Big D festival themed?

@Disappointed Posted on Sunday 25 Aug 2019

That music is still around but there's a time and place. Do you really think that time and place is a festival themed event full of drunk freshers looking to party?

Hi, yeah we'll be putting out an external noise management team to monitor the levels as we did last year. In addition, we're heading to the Good Neighbours Group tomorrow to further discuss how we can ease any concerns people might have with the event. We're also running the event earlier on the Saturday too, so it won't go into the early hours like last time.

We want to put on a quality event for our students, but of course, not at the cost of damaging our generally good relations (compared to other cities) with local residents.

Others who aren't so excited: On the acts, I'm sorry if you're not excited by them, we can't please everyone, and there are so many factors involved with regards to getting acts... Obviously budget, but where they are in the UK/World, personal circumstances and simply, whether or not this is an event that appeals to them...

I'm confident - as the vast majority of people seem to be so far - that we've got a quality line up and that we've done our absolute best to provide the absolute best available, given all of the variables and restrictions we have had to deal with.

Katy B, Pigeons and Shy FX are very different acts which should appeal to a wider set of students than usual, and they're each really, really good at what they do.

Anyway, we're really exited about it, it's selling at a rate we've never seen before, and we're doing what we can to make it an even tighter show after last year's experiment on Hes East - which well very well overall!

You'll find out if you come!
