Does the YUSU President realise that the reason there were less complaints this year is because less people were involved or excited about the elections?

Reducing the number of sabbatical positions available should have INCREASED the number of candidates standing for the other five positions.

That's a failure, not a success.

Also, since WHEN are results not announced at a massive late night event?

Would never have happened under Lord M. Burton.

Reply

Oliver Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Burton is surely present even though he's not part of YUSU?

Reply

Hann Bunn Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Bruno: Also, it's hard to make complaints if the general student population (rather than those running for positions, or their campaign teams) doesn't actually know the rules of the contest.

Reply

M J Burton Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

That's because you're announcing the results in my bar. My presence can always be felt in the Courtyard.

Reply

Oliver Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Haha, you legend Matt. :)

Reply

Hann Bunn Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Burton: Well, the Courtyard does look like the colour scheme was suggested by someone who's turned up to election night in a jelly-bean patterned helmet in a previous year...

It's a shame for uni sports that Sam's going to get another go, we had a real chance to move forward this year in reducing the sports centre fees and getting work started on the tent etc from the work done by past YorkSport sabbs and not much has progressed ... and the organisation of varsity was a shambles.

I don't know Ben well at all but would have been nice for someone else to have had a shot at it and try and move things forwards at a quicker pace.

hopefully there is a bit more visible progression within YorkSport next year, it's what should be expected of a top 10 university ...

Reply

Jason Rose Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

I still wish the Courtyard had been named "MJB's"...

Reply

Hann Bunn Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

I thought Charlie Leyland had been renamed Brian Blessed?

Wake up disappointed Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

I think those comments are fairly ignorant of the progress that has been made.

Sam has been a complete attribute to YUSU for sports, and other aspects as well. He achieved all of his goals within a term and has promised lots more, he knows Yorksport more than anyone and the fact that he is willing to spend another year working for York should only be seen as a gift.

Reply

Jason Rose Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Reliably informed it means "big name on campus" - Vision reckon I'm one, though no word from Nouse.

Really it means "person some society and media bigwigs think of as well-known" and is only relevant in SU elections and uni popularity contests :P

Reply

elecwatcher Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

It's disappointing how small the margins are. That will not help the SU's mandate at fighting increased fees and rediculous expenses!

Reply

Max S Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Really really proud of my big man Sam winning Sports.

Reply

Max S Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

CHARLIE ROWLEY FOR PRESIDENT. Lydia 60% confident?? cocky!

Reply

ddd Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

"and is only relevant in SU elections and uni popularity contests :P"

i agree it's relevant in elections, but i wouldn't necessarily describe most BNOCs as 'popular'. not at least with the normal student population.

Reply

Hann Bunn Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

ddd: It depends on who's defining them as BNOCs.

Reply

@ hann bunn, elaborate?

Ta-who?

Reply

Weepy Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

why so much crying?

Reply

Hann Bunn Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

ddd: Everyone knows different people. I'm sure that people involved in York Sport will consider different people BNOCs to people involved in YUM, for example. A status of BNOC is one person's opinions, rather than an absolute truth.

Reply

Craig David Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Disappointed in the turn-out at results night this year. Hoping YUSU will do a better job advertising the elections in 2012!! Let's 'rewind' to yesterday - there was no facebook event for results night. Glad for tim ellis though. Dont know what the booing for lydia was about. Maybe 'seven days' isnt enough time to generate interest for the elections. p.s. Liked the graphics. Really showed the 'rise and fall' of this year's candidates.

Reply

elecwatcher Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Looking at the votes, how is AV fair? Tim didn't get the most number of 1st votes from any of the colleges yet he won?

Reply

Ben Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Really fantastic news that YUSU has Tim Ellis as president! There's obviously something about the name Tim!

Reply

Queen Victoria Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Reply

Sexist Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

@=O

'another'? When was the last all male one then?

Reply

Alex R Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

@elecwatcher: AV/IRV is fair because Tim managed to (just) appeal to the most people, once Charlie and Aaron were eliminated in the earlier rounds. It's true that Lydia (initially) received the most first preference votes, but not enough to have an actual majority, hence the further rounds, with votes transferring to ensure that they weren't wasted. It's pretty much the fairest way possible of electing a single person.

Re: 22:41 Liveblog Post

It's nice to see the one of Vision and Nouse being hospitable towards the other! Admittedly though Vision's photos seem a lot better, which is weird as when I was still at the university, Vision always suffered to Nouse in terms of photos. That's a pale comparison to now as it seems Vision have finally managed to assemble a half decent photo team! Impressive!

Reply

Interested Posted on Wednesday 21 Aug 2019

Still not sure of this whole AV/IRV thing.

I agree second and third preferences should come into account, but surely not with the same weighting as first preferences.

Someone who voted for Rolph effectively got to vote three times...
