Hughes sets out in his manifesto how he wants to "go beyond the posters" and make sure students actually understand the problem issues. He identifies several areas that he would concentrate on; notably, improving the awareness and knowledge of sexual health testing. Hughes also focuses on the army of volunteers that York has and wants to support them to help give advice to students.
- Improve the awareness of mental health issues and the services available by making it not just a week-long event, but something that is known about all year round.
- Create a booklet called "The Joys of University Sex" and extend the hours for STI-testing in the Health Centre.
- A calendar of welfare events on the YUSU website and greater explanation and advice for students looking for accommodation off-campus.
- Improve communication with college and liberation welfare teams by meeting with them more regularly.
